Lotus Cars is an automobile manufacturer from UK. It manufactures racing and sports cars. The headquarters of the company are located at Norfolk, England. The company handles the designs and builds production and race automobiles, which are light-weight and come with superb handling features. An engineer Colin Chapman formed the Company with the name Lotus Engineering Limited. Colin Chapman happens to be an engineering graduate from University college of London, who graduated in the year 1952. Initial, the factory was set up in the old stables, located behind Railway Hotel in a place called Hornsey. In 1954, team Lotus got separated from Lotus Engineering Limited. From 1958 to 1994 the team is competitive and active in Formula One Racing. In the year 1959, Lotus Group of companies was formed. In the year 1971, Lotus Components Limited was renamed to Lotus Racing Company. But in the same year, the renamed company gave up their operations. In 1959, the company shifted to a factory, which was purposefully built in Chestnut. Since 1966, the company had a modern factory with road test facility in a place called Hethel near Wymondham. Earlier this site was used as a RAF Hethel Base and runway was being used as test track. At the age of 54, in 1982 Chapman died due to heart attack. He was a son of an Inn-keeper. He ended his life as a Multi-millionaire industrialist. He built millions of cars, which were successfully used as road and racing cars. He also won Formula One World Championship for seven times. He was involved in the scandal of using the government subsidies for producing De-Lorean DMC 12. For these cars the chassis was designed by Lotus. In the year 1986, General Motors bought the company. In the year 1993, General Motors sold the company to A.C.B.N. holdings for 30 Million Pounds. It was operated by a businessman from Italy, whose name is Romano Artioli. He also has Bugatti Automobili spA. Later in 1996, a major share of Lotus was bought by Perusahaan Otomobil nasional Bhd. It is a car company of Malaysia, which is also listed on the stock exchange charts of Kaula Lumpur. This Malaysian car company is also an engineering consultancy. For other manufacturers of cars it provides engineering developments mainly of suspensions. The powertrain department is responsible for designing and developing the engine with 4 cylinders, which can be found in many of General Motors cars such as Saab, Vauxhall and Opel. It can also be spotted in some of the Saturn cars.
