An automobile brand Jeep has been a subsidiary of Chrysler since 1987. Jeep was found in 1941. The headquarters of Jeep are situated in Ohio State of United States. The Jeep happens to be the oldest SUV and an Off-road vehicle, while the second oldest SUV is Land-Rover. Original vehicle was first produced as the model named Bantam BRC. It was the first light-weighted vehicle with 4 wheels. During the Second World War II and the post-period of war, it was used by the US army and its allies. Many countries produced several vehicles, which are similar to Bantam and are used by civilians and military since then. In 20th century, US Postal Services also used Jeeps for its mail services. Many explanations exist about the origin of the name of the vehicle Jeep. The most popular among them is that the vehicle had the name GP, which phonetically sounds as Jeep. Here GP refers to General Purposes or Government purposes. The first Jeep Bantam BRC was built in Pennsylvania by American Bantam. They also built the vehicles of the companies like Ford and Willys-Overland. Bantam met the specifications given by Army in its design, but not in its torque. Army had in its mind that the company will not be able to produce the number they need as the company is small. That is the reason why army gave a chance to Ford and Willys to make another vehicle. And also they took this decision after they experienced the action of Bantam’s vehicle. Field testing was done to all the three models in large quantities (1500 each). As the bidding process of the contract of 16000 jeeps was still going on, Chief engineer of Willys-Overland Delmar Barney Roos did many changes in order to satisfy the specification of weight i.e. a maximum of 2,175 pounds, water and oil. Thus, he got a powerful and a heavy engine, and bagged the first contract from the army. The major backdrop for the company is that it had only single manufacturing facility. Due to these reasons, US Government asked Ford Motor Company also to produce the jeeps. They assigned the name model as GPW where G represents Government vehicle, P represents wheelbase of 80” and W represents Willy’s Engine Design. Hence Ford and Willys produced jeeps in excess of count of 600,000. This was done under the guidance of Charles E. Sorensen who was working as Vice-President for Ford Company during World War II.
