Citroen The famous French automobile manufacturer Citroën (pronounced as sitro??n), has been named after the founder André Citroën. Currently headquartered at Roe Fructidor, Paris this automobile manufacturing brand became the first ever car company, which started mass-production outside the vicinity of United States of America. The company started in the year 1919, but since 1976 it has become partial-subsidiary of the PSA Peugeot Citroën. Presently about 13,900 employees work for the organization, and Citroën has bagged countless awards right from local awards, European Car of the Year awards, down to the USA Car of the Year awards. Initially the brand was known for manufacturing cars in bulk, with straightforward designs, but they decided to change their rapport in the market, and finally in the year 1934, Citroen succeeded in launching the first front wheel drive car in the world - Traction Avant. The bigger shocker to everyone was the mere fact that they decided to start its mass production rather than limited production, and gained hefty profits with it during the period 1934 to 1956. They also followed up with other model such as the 2CV from1948 to 90, the H Van from 1947 to 81, the DS from 1955 to 1975 as well as the CX from 1974 to 1991. The founder Andre Citroen used unique advertising tactics such as using the Eiffel Tower as the advertising sign, which has been even registered in the Guinness Book of Records, as the world's largest advertising sign. Citroen has won the European Car of the Year awards on three occasions with Citroën GS in 1971, Citroën CX in 1975 and the Citroën XM in the year 1990. Today, Citroen manufactures several unbeatable cars with unmatched performance, but the best part is that the company believes in mass production and therefore, they bring down the cost considerably. Looking at their releases, Citroën SM came out in 1971, followed by Citroën Visa in 1979, the Citroën AX in 1988, Citroën Xantia in 1994, Citroën C3 in 2003, Citroën C4 in 2005, as recently the Citroën Grand C4 Picasso released off late in 2007. The brand has also grabbed the USA Car of the Year award in the year 1972, as they bagged the Citroën SM Motor Trend Car of the Year Award, which was their first sign of considerable success in the U.S market.
