Bugati was originally founded by Ettore Bugatti in the year 1909, but the brand vanished during the Second World War and was revived by Volkswagen Group. Currently it is known for manufacturing the limited edition sports cars. The company was started in Molsheim, which happened to be a part of Germany until 1919, and it was famous for manufacturing the top class luxurious cars during the 1920s. However, Molsheim is now a part of France, and even the fate of Bugatti changed with the Second World War, and it ceased to produce further, after releasing their last model during the 1950s. They were also into airplane part production, which formed the basis of the sale. The brand was sold to Hispano-Suiza in 1963, and Bugatti Automobili SpA became the successor of the original brand. Initially, the Bugatti's cars were not just mechanical creations but rather production of artistic creation as well. In order to ensure that the surfaces were extremely flat eliminating the need of gaskets for sealing, the engine blocks were hand scraped, and safety wires were also incorporated into the design quite elegantly. The original Ettore Bugatti's vehicles were produced only in small numbers and the famous ones include the "Royale", Type 35 Grand Prix cars, the Type 55 as well as the the Type 57 "Atlantic sports car. These racing cars gained extra-ordinary fame in Grand-Prix racing they made an exceptional entry in the world of racing as the little Bugatti Type 10 grabbed the top-4 spots in its first-ever race. The Bugatti Type 35 manufactured in 1924 has bagged about 2000 wins in the races, and considered to be the most successful racing car of all times. Apparently very few of the old Bugattis still exist and on 2nd January, 2009 a rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante was spotted in the garage of a dead English surgeon. It is reported that only about seventeen models in this range were built by hand. Bugatti is not well known for its artistic designs as well as countless victories in racing, but probably the most memorable event associated with the brand was the victory secured by Pierre Wimille & Pierre Veyron in the 1939 race, in which they had only one car along with some meagre resources. As per records, only about 7900 cars were ever manufactured, out of which under 2000 of them still exist. Shalimar the Clown is a fictionalized version of the story of Bugatti, captured in the novel by Salman Rushdie.
